Designing and Printing with Block Print with Nicholas Hughes
Join Nicholas Hughes to design and print with block prints referencing small found objects, real and tangible: a seed pod, a curled leaf, a knick-knack. Be guided through some basic steps to form, make and print a simple pattern repeat design.
Inspired by the can-do ethos of decoration and to celebrate the handmade at David Parr House, workshoppers will turn quick sketches into cutouts, which will form their designs. Using tools to carve small lino blocks, you will be guided through some basic mark-marking techniques to carve your design onto a block for printing. “Mistakes and splodges” are encouraged so this workshop is suitable for beginners as well as anyone who has already tried their hand at lino carving and printing. Follow the process and you end up with a beautiful repeat that you would not have imagined at the beginning of the day.
Enjoy a light lunch of pastries and cake provided by independent Norfolk Street Bakery. There will also be the opportunity to have a 15-minute look inside 186 Gwydir Street during the workshop break.
What to bring:
All materials used are natural and inks water based, so prints produced in the workshop will be dry and ready to take home by the end of the workshop. Bring something waterproof to take them home in. A poster tube is perfect.
