An Introduction to Jewellery: Making a Pendant with Rebecca Ilett
Join jewellery artist Rebecca Ilett for an introduction to jewellery making and create your own mixed-metal pendant. Inspired by the decorative patterns and textures found throughout David Parr House, you'll learn traditional jewellery-making techniques using brass, copper, silver and gilding metal to create a unique piece to take home.
In this workshop, you will:
Design a pendant inspired by the patterns and shapes found in the house
Learn how to cut metal using a piercing saw
Explore techniques including annealing, soldering, shaping, filing and finishing
Add texture and pattern using hammers and punches
Make a jump ring or bail to complete your pendant
Polish your finished piece ready to wear
Learn how to work safely and confidently with jewellery-making tools and equipment
What to expect
A small, friendly group, limited to 8 participants
A hands-on workshop in our Studio, with plenty of individual guidance
Suitable for beginners as well as those with more jewellery-making experience
Time to experiment with a range of traditional jewellery-making techniques
A light lunch of pastries and cake from local independent bakery Norfolk Street Bakery
During the lunch break, the opportunity to glimpse inside David Parr House for inspiration
What to bring
Please bring a sketchbook and pencil if you'd like to sketch ideas.
All tools and materials will be provided, including brass, copper, silver, gilding metal, solder, and a cord or chain for your finished pendant.
About Rebecca Ilett
Rebecca Ilett is an artist and educator who creates jewellery and sculpture from her Cambridgeshire workshop. She teaches locally at Cambridge Art Makers in Linton, as well as at Morley College and City Lit in London. Her work has recently been exhibited in Chicago, Munich, Collect Art Fair and Goldsmiths' Fair in London. Passionate about jewellery-making and silversmithing education, Rebecca has taught a wide range of jewellery-making techniques for many years.
