Walter Hoyle: A Restless Practice

This exhibition brings together etchings, aquatints, linocuts and screenprints by British painter, printmaker and illustrator Walter Hoyle (1922–2000), a central figure in Cambridge’s art scene from the 1960s onwards. Hoyle taught at Cambridge School of Art from 1964 until 1984, where he established and ran the printmaking studio. 

As part of David Parr House’s 2026 theme, Maps, Travel and Journeys, the exhibition reflects on an artist whose life and practice were shaped by movement. Hoyle travelled throughout his life, and his work was equally restless, continually shifting between places, techniques, styles and subjects. 

Featuring work made across different moments in his career, the exhibition highlights Hoyle’s experimental approach to printmaking and his importance to the growth and vibrancy of Cambridge’s artistic life.
