Pictures for Schools
Pictures for Schools explores the legacy of the pioneering post-war initiative of the same name, founded by artist and educationalist Nan Youngman. Running from 1 July–8 August 2026 in our Studio Gallery at David Parr House, the exhibition brings together paintings, drawings and prints from the collection of Robjn Cantus, originally selected for schools between 1947 and 1969.
The scheme enabled schools to purchase original works by contemporary artists, placing museum-quality art directly into classrooms and corridors. It was shaped by a belief in the importance of art education and the role of everyday visual experience in learning and creativity. These works, often modest in scale but rich in imagination, reflect an approach to education that valued access, creativity, and the presence of original art in school life.
Featuring artists including Frances Hodgkins, Walter Hoyle, Bernard Cheese, Elizabeth Vellacott and Warwick Hutton, the exhibition highlights how art education helped shape the visual culture of British schools.
Open Wed–Sat, 10am–5pm, 1 July–8 August 2026.
