Heatwave in Antarctic: Prints by Tadek Beutlich
This exhibition presents the prints of Tadek Beutlich (1922–2011), better known as one of the most important and experimental textile artists of the post-war era. The show focuses on works produced between 1962 and 1967, including several created with the influential publisher Editions Alecto.
Beutlich’s work is characterised by experimental use of materials, often incorporating non-traditional elements, large-scale, textural, abstract forms and later smaller figurative pieces, alongside pioneering off-loom weaving techniques.
He brought the same spirit of innovation and freedom to printmaking. Typically described as block or relief prints, Beutlich carved the blocks himself, using lino, timber, natural materials, and later Lycra. He worked without a press, choosing to walk on his prints to create impressions. Abstract and organic in theme, the prints echo the forms and tactile quality of his woven work.
This exhibition is presented in partnership with Emma Mason Gallery.
