New Exhibition

Image 1: Detail of The Evolution of Klang, Reproduction of a spread drawn by Will Carter to illustrate the design of Klang for his article on the type in the Penrose Annual (1957). Image 2: Loose sheet, Alphabet set in Klang from Folio 2: Projects, backward glances and jeux d’esprit put together by Will & Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, 1974

Co-curated with Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press, this exhibition explores the Press’s rich history and focuses on its use of blackletter typefaces. Beginning as a hobby for Will Carter, The Rampant Lions Press evolved into a full-time business after WWII. Learn the story of this historic press and discover its connection to the decorative schemes of David Parr.

Founded in 1924, the Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge, England, established itself as one of the leading letterpress workshops in the decades after the Second World War. Will was joined by his son Sebastian in the 1960s, and the business became known worldwide for its craftsmanship and design skills. Sebastian retired in 2008, and closed the workshop.
