Swimming in the rivers of Cambridge has always been one of the leisure pursuits enjoyed by many. There was a time when diving was encouraged and women had to fight to have their own space on the river bank. River swimming was a favourite pastime of Elsie’s husband, Alfred, who encouraged the whole family to swim (in their respective areas). In this talk Tamsin will take us on a leisurely journey down its waters starting with the ever popular swimming spots of the Granta to the wider waters of the Cam that were once filled with working barges as well as leisure boats and even the odd steam boat.
