Description

Discover the world of Blackwork embroidery with Royal School of Needlework course leader Beatrice Mayfield in this day workshop on Saturday 28th September, 10.30am – 3.30pm.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Discover the history of Blackwork, a stitch often seen in Tudor portraits and introduced to England during this period
  • Learn the fundamentals of the craft through working a range of stitches.
  • Work on linen and a range of different threads to create different effects on a small sampler demonstrating shading, pattern and introducing colour.
  • Have an optional walkthrough of David Parr House.
  • Enjoy refreshments, tea, coffee and biscuits.
  • Go home with your sampler and skills to continue your making at home.

This is suitable for both beginners and more confident stitchers.

About the artist:

Beatrice Mayfield is a senior visiting lecturer for BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery for Fashion, Interiors, and Textile Art at the Royal School of Needlework, the only degree in hand embroidery in Europe. Mentor, lecturer. textile artist, and designer, working for clients including fashion houses internationally and private collectors. She is a gallery-represented textile artist specialising in hand-embroidered textiles using a range of traditional embroidery techniques and processes combined with hand print. Intricate areas of stitch, embellishment or raised work provide pattern and texture and all work incorporates a high level of craftsmanship with contemporary design. She produces fine art pieces as well as collections of wearables such as jewellery and accessories.

There is a long tradition within textiles and particularly embroidery of reappropriation. The ‘good’ part of a garment being cut down and re-used; appliqués that can be moved to another garment; changeable collars or cuffs used for ‘best’. Small pieces of decoration that lift a garment, when it is impractical or unaffordable to have the whole piece covered. Her work fits into this history, the wearer can add embellishment where and when they want through a brooch or a neckpiece. Beatrice has exhibited widely, including at Collect and at London Craft Week.
