Letters in stone are there to last; for thousands of years, they have existed to make permanent the things that matter most to us – telling our stories long after we are gone. The distinctive lettering of the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop is celebrated worldwide. Founded by David Kindersley in the 1930s, and thanks to its apprenticeships it continues to thrive today. Roxanne discusses the joy of learning by doing, handing on knowledge through traditional apprenticeship and keeping the craft alive for future generations.
Roxanne Kindersley runs the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge; a Lettercutting studio that follows traditional methods of cutting by hand using only mallet and chisel. Celebrating lettering as its own artform, their work evolves out of functionality. It has become a landmark, as seen in the British Library gates, Glasgow Museum of Art and the National Gallery, and across Cambridge.
